Good design meets a real need, solves a real problem.
Good design is deeply considerate of the
people who will be interacting with it.
Otherwise it is bound inevitably for failure.
A good designer seeks to understand the
areas where people adapt to "holes" in
the current design, and makes it a goal to
fill those gaps to meet the needs of
people.
Consider this comparison from John Berry:
|
Good design | vs. | Bad design |
| Meets a real need | Is superfluous |
| Makes something better | Adds complexity |
| Has visceral aesthetics | Is "gut ugly"
(due to improper application
of design principles) |
| Has a clear objective | Is an unclear idea
looking for a purpose |
"Art is for self-expression; Design serves
others"
